OUR MISSION
BETTER CARE FOR ALL MOTHERS
The Cost of Failing Maternal Health Care
01
Thousands of babies are stillborn everyday
Every year, nearly 1 in 100 babies are stillborn or die shortly after birth. This means approximately 9 babies are lost daily in the UK and 5,200 globally.
02
Ethnic minority women are 4x more likely to die
Black women are over four times more likely to die during and after childbirth than white women, while Asian women face nearly double the risk, revealing stark inequalities.
03
Bad outcomes are too costly for families and the NHS
In 2021-22, the NHS spent a staggering £8.2 billion on maternity claims—60% of its total litigation costs. In some cases, these claims exceed the cost of providing care, as high-value settlements for severe birth injuries often exceed the expenses of delivering care. Yet beyond the financial impact lies an even greater cost: the lives and well-being affected by preventable outcomes.
04
Widespread birth trauma rates led to public inquiries
79% of women reportedly experience birth trauma—a crisis that has led to widespread complaints, intense public scrutiny, and now, formal inquiries. These investigations have uncovered deep failings in maternity care, pushing the UK government and NHS to make this issue a top priority for urgent reform.
05
Suicide is still the leading cause of death for mothers
In the UK, suicide accounts for approximately 40% of maternal deaths within the first year after childbirth, making it the leading cause of death for new mothers. In the U.S., postpartum suicide rates are estimated to be 5-7 times higher than in women of reproductive age who are not pregnant or postpartum.
